2010
The Montego Bay High School International Alumnae Association, Inc. (MBHSIAA) was established in 2010 as a non-profit organization and as an umbrella organization to unite former students of Montego Bay High School at the international level. Its official launch took place at the Doctor’s Cave Beach during Montego Bay High School’s 75th-anniversary celebrations. Its membership comprises alumnae from various countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, as well as the MBHS diaspora spread throughout Asia, the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa, and other regions around the globe. Donations to the school included $1600 in proceeds from the launch event and class ring sales.
2011
The Association held its first annual Grand Reunion Celebration in 2011. The Gala event was held on October 22 at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Hotel and festivities continued over a three-day period. The MBHS principal at the time, Donna Redway, delivered the keynote speech and sponsors such as Sunset Beach Resort and Shaw Park Beach Resort enabled fundraising auctions that greatly increased the proceeds raised from the event.
As a result of this event and other generous donations by alumnae and friends, the school received $13,600 in equipment donations in that year, including 21 computer-and-LaserJet-printer bundles. The equipment was transported from Florida to Montego Bay courtesy of Dennis Shipping International.
That year also saw the first Teach of the Year award conferred upon Mrs. Sharon Cunningham-Moore, who is also a member of the 1980 MBHS graduating class.
2012
In 2012 IAMBHS celebrated two years of existence with two special donations. MBHS received $8,500 toward the purchase of a new school bus, and the school’s sports department received $3.200 for purchasing equipment for its various athletic programs.
2013
The association held another Grand Reunion and Gala fundraising event in 2013, this time at Maestro’s in Bronx, New York. This and other fundraising activities throughout the year facilitated the final contributions for the completion of the school bus project. The IAMBHS was able to provide $27,600 in additional funds for the project and garnered an added $10,000 ($1 million JMD) from one of its major donors, Mr. Dennis Hawthorne, owner of Dennis Shipping International. Further donations to the school came in the form of scholarships amounting to $3,200 presented to several students.
The year 2013 also saw awards granted to members and well-wishers of the MBHS International Alumnae Association. These included the Member of the Year award, which went to Sharon Caine, a former secretary of the board. An annual scholarship given by Sharon’s mother Mrs. Cynthia Wallace memorializes her son Fred Wallace, who excelled in musical performance and composition. In 2014, the organization conferred its first community service award upon June Chin (alumna) and Kenny Chin (husband) who are owners of the Royal Caribbean Bakery. These generous and eminent persons have committed themselves to the annual donation of scholarships to MBHS students throughout the years: the Dothlin Harvey-Campbell Annual Memorial Scholarships in memory of June’s mother.
2014
In 2014, the school bus was purchased as the culmination of efforts made by a vibrant collaborative of alumnae, sponsors, and well-wishers of the Montego Bay High School. The Alumnae Association also awarded $3,200 in scholarships to students of MBHS.
2015
The 2015 year combined a celebration of Homecoming with the Association’s 5th anniversary and the 80th Anniversary of the school’s existence. The anniversary celebration took place during the week of November 22-28, 2015 with the theme of “Unconquerable and Enduring.” These landmark moments were recognized with the Alumnae Association’s gifting to the school of a brand-new Steinway-Boston piano along with its annual scholarships. The Steinway was worth $7,000 and the scholarships amounted to $3,200.
The 80th Anniversary Celebration began on Sunday, November 22, 2015, with a thanksgiving church service held at Saint James Parish Church at 11:00 a.m., and on Monday the alumnae took charge of devotions at the school. They also participated in Cultural Competition and held an Open Day with display booths on November 24. The alumnae challenged the school’s netball team during the netball rally and then ventured out into the wider community for outreach, with donations made to the St. James Infirmary. The school’s Annual Prize Giving Ceremony took place on November 26 at 10 a.m. and that evening the IAMBHS held a dinner at Day-O Plantation. The celebration included a spa event at Secrets Resorts and culminated in a Gala banquet on November 28.
2016
In 2016, the Association’s Grand Gala was held at the Atlanta Marriott over the weekend of October 21-23, a fund-raising event that facilitated the school’s support in various ways. The Alumnae Association presented the school’s athletic department with a check for $5,000 in aid of equipment purchases and nutritional supplements for the athletes. The school’s student-athletes from a variety of its sports teams benefited from this effort to keep them healthy, well equipped, and formidable in the very competitive world of Jamaican sports. The association also presented two scholarships to the school: one $10,000 courtesy of Dennis Shipping and another of $3000, as its annually scheduled contribution to student academics.
2017 - 2020
The year 2017 began with a goal: to raise $30,000 for the purchase of 30 high-quality and future-proof laptops to equip the school’s computer lab. The association also planned a fundraising Cuba and Bahamas cruise for July 2 – 6, 2018 on the Norwegian Sky cruise line as one of its ways to achieve this goal. It also continued its commitment to providing scholarships for students, and in 2020 it expanded this scholarship program to include 8 new disbursals to incoming first form (7th grade) students.
